Van tijd tot tijd is het belangrijk om even stil te staan en te beseffen wat écht belangrijk is in het leven. Zerohedge wijst ons in dit opzicht op “The Greatest Speech Ever”. Er zijn al grote spreker geweest in de geschiedenis, denk maar aan Martin Luther King (ten goede) of Adolf Hitler (ten kwade). Maar de volgende mooie, roerende woorden komen vanuit een heel onverwachte bron : wijlen Sir Charles Chaplin, een van de grootste komieken ooit.
The Great Dictator
Natuurlijk heeft u zijn films gezien – The Tramp, Limelight, Modern Times,…, en misschien zijn knapste en meest belangrijke, universele ook : The Great Dictator. Het is een satirische aanval op het toen, jaren dertig, opkomende fascisme. In deze politieke, toen erg controversiële film speelt hij zowel een Joodse kapper als de dictator Adenoid Hynkel. Het werd een enorm succes en terecht. Politici zagen Chaplin echter liever gaan dan komen :
“[Chaplin] has refused to become an American citizen. His very life in Hollywood is detrimental to the moral fabric of America. [If he is deported] … his loathsome pictures can be kept from before the eyes of the American youth. He should be deported and gotten rid of at once.”
De speech die hij 75 jaar geleden op het witte doek gaf is nog steeds even relevant vandaag. Een extract :
“More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. To those who can hear me, I say – do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed – the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish”. And particularly relevant is the following, as it applies to nearly all world leaders today and it should serve to awaken us to the knowledge that divided we will fall to the brutal immorality of today’s banking/government/military complex, but united, we have the power to change our futures for the better : “You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy let’s use that power – let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security”.
