Noam Chomsky moet niet meer geïntroduceerd worden…maar misschien toch een korte omschrijving van de Amerikaanse schrijver, filosoof, historicus, taalkundige, politiek activist en hoogleraar emeritus van Joodse afkomst. (Dit laatste is belangrijk om te weten omdat hij zelf grote kritiek uit op de Israëlische politiek.) Chomsky is een criticus in hart en nieren. Een icoon eigenlijk, op zijn 91ste jaar(!) Hij publiceerde een lange lijst aan belangrijke boeken en artikels en geeft ook lezingen. Wikipedia.org: ‘Hij geldt als criticus van de mondialisering, de media en het neoliberalisme. Zijn analyses vinden veel belangstelling bij (radicaal-)links. Doordat hij zijn standpunten doorgaans op degelijk onderzoek baseert, wordt hij eveneens door intellectuelen van links en rechts gerespecteerd. Minder appreciatie genieten de conclusies die hij trekt, die volgens Amerikaanse rechts-conservatieve critici in de buurt komen van samenzweringstheorieën. De New York Times noemde zijn politieke analyses ooit “simplistisch”, maar ze beschreven hem tevens als de belangrijkste levende intellectueel. In de tussentijd is hij blijven schrijven en doceren over taalkunde en de gevolgen van het Amerikaanse buitenlands beleid.’
Pragmatisch en praktisch
Noem hem een links intellectueel. We besloten een aantal van zijn meest sprekende quotes hier aan te halen. ‘Ter Leering ende Vermaeck‘, maar vooral om eens goed over na te denken. Natuurlijk mag zijn eigen stem in deze niet ontbreken. In de video’s verderop spreekt Noam Chomsky zich ook uit over de wereldwijde demonstraties en protesten. Tegen racisme en bruut politiegeweld. Die zijn her en der nu tot beeldenstormen geëvolueerd. Of gedegenereerd. Persoonlijk denk ik dat we daarmee een weg zonder einde zijn ingeslagen. Het verleden kan en moet beschouwd en geplaatst worden, maar om nu elk standbeeld te gaan bekladden of vernielen? Dit gaat de kant van een revolutie uit. Om als BBC nu een aflevering van het hilarische Fawlty Towers te censureren? Gaan we straks over op massale zelfcensuur, op boekverbrandingen? We denken dat hier en masse tegen symbolen wordt tekeer gegaan. Waarbij de grond van de zaak naar de achtergrond dreigt te gaan. Beter is misschien naar de toekomst te kijken. Pragmatisch te handelen en meer concreet ook: wat kunnen overheden én burgers vandaag bijdragen om de samenleving leefbaarder te maken. Voor iederéén ongeacht ras, kleur, geslacht, sexuele voorkeur, afkomst of politieke mening…dat is: voor iedereen van goede wil!
