De Amerikaan Michael Moore (geboren 1954, Michaelmoore.com) is een politiek en maatschappelijk geëngageerd schrijver, TV/film/documentaire-maker die al heel wat prijzen voor zijn werk gekregen heeft. Wat hij maakt slaat altijd in als een bom; hoewel of misschien precies omdat hij van zijn land houdt, doet het hem oprecht pijn het naar de verdommenis te zien gaan…
Prachtig palmares
Moorde debuteerde in 1989 met Roger & Me, een film over de sluiting van General Motors in zijn geboorteplaats Flint, Michigan. Het autobedrijf verplaatste toen de productie naar het goedkopere Mexico en Flint verwerd tot een economische woestijn.
De documentaire Bowling For Columbine ging over de vrije wapenverkoop in de VS en de schietpartijen op scholen die er met regelmaat plaatsvinden.
De best bekeken documentaire ooit en zijn internationale doorbraak was wel de film Fahrenheit 9/11, over de aanslag op de Twin Towers in 2001.
Moore is ook de koning van de ludieke acties : zo collecteerde hij in 2009 voor “arme topmanagers”.
Met Slackers Uprising ging hij in 2004 de hort op doorheen de VS om een tweede verkiezing van George Bush als president te proberen voorkomen. In 63 steden sprak hij voor tal van universiteiten om tenminste de Amerikaanse jeugd te overtuigen. Aan het eind van de film komt dan de aftiteling : van die jeugd stemde inderdaad de meerderheid tegen…maar hun ouders stemden helaas wel voor Bush.
Scherpe pen, scherpe tong
Michael Moore combineert een scherpe pen met een scherpe tong, en bezit een bijzonder soort humor die doorheen alles verweven zit. Je moét gewoon als weldenkend, kritisch mens iets van hem lezen of zien. Zijn nieuwste boek is uit en het is een autobiografie geworden : “Here Comes Trouble : Stories From My Life”.
